2nd attempt with selection of leather covers. Tip:: Bending bamboo by Microwave is very successful. However, to the matter in hand. There will be no practice this Sat morn. Combination of regular hands away on other business and of course Wales in semi of Rugby world cup. As a fellow Celt I wish them all the very best but am sure they will succeed.
Do remember that there is the usual practice on Sunday at Uwic from 1000 -1300hrs. Depending on the celebrations or commiserations after the match I may even get there myself.

We have booked the leisure centre, main hall, at the University Hospital of Wales for Sat afternoon, 1400 - 1800hrs and Sunday Morn 0900 - 1300hrs. There will be a dinner venue organised for the Sat eve immediately after practice, more details later.
There will be a charge of £5 per day, to help support the squad, which will be collected by a squad member on the day. This charge will apply to everyone including Akai Ryuu members. However, for the opportunity to practice with squad it is exceedingly good value for money. Your NCP carpark charges will cost you more!

Given past experience this means that parking around Sophia may be a problem, hence the change of venue. Next Akai Ryuu beginners class

Beginners Class Sept

The new Beginners class will commence at 1930hrs on 14 September, at the Welsh Institute of Sport. The £60 fee for the six week course includes a new shinai and 4 months membership with the British Kendo Association. Normal start time is 2000 - 2100hrs but we need to get application, insurance and issue of shinai sorted out on first night.
This is a change from our original date due to the international Cricket match with Pakistan, which is being played on the adjacent venue...ie cannot get near the WIS on cricket nights!!

The inter-regional Taikai 7 August

Just a reminder to all Kendoka who wish to participate in the next regional Taikai. AKAI RYUU are hosting this taikai at the University of Wales Hospital (what used to be called the Heath) leisure centre on the 7 August 2010, 0900-1200hrs. All welcome, three or five man teams depending on numbers. However, this is a friendly affair, so if you need team members I am sure we can provide some. There will be a small prize for the winning team...depending on what the local charity shops have in store at the time!! The plan is for a brief warm up, then about two hours of competition, leaving us a good hour for the poor old referees to get a chance for for a bit of Gi-Geiko.

Sat extended practice

Regional Taikai at Bristol 20 April

Thought I had posted this at last week. Neil Donnelly, who runs Bristol club now, has offered to host the next regional Taikai (club competition). I shall not be taking part as he wants me to be one of the judges. So, as many as we can get to go across to make up at least a couple of teams. It's a very friendly affair with the guys and girls from Gloucester and Cheltenham also putting up teams. Good chance to practice for competition or grading. There will be a gi-keiko after the competition so that us wrinklies can get up a bit of a sweat! Then the plan is to go round to a nearby pub and sink a few pints. I shall probably be going from Usk but I can meet you all at the Coldra roundabout to econimise on cars on way across. We will speak about it on Tues, but as I hope most of the senior students will go, we will probably have to cancel Tues 20th at WIS (incl beginners if James wishes to go...is the Pope a .... better not go there). Let me know numbers on Tues and settle travel arrangements either Tues or Sat.

3. e-voting before the AGM would probably reflect the true figure

Additionally I cannot be at the AGM but have a member from my club to present this at the AGM. If you could kindly help in anyways that would be most appreciated but if only you would vote on this motion of course.

A motion of no confidence is submitted against M. Davis 7th Dan Kyoshi BKA Kendo Bucho because:
(a) of financial impropriety
(b) of failure to consider the needs of BKA members
(c) of conduct unbecoming an officer of the BKA.

Financial impropriety:-
(i)Unreasonable ‘ expense claims’ with respect to subsistence expenditure and travel, including a failure to utilise UK resident ‘high grades’ for National & Regional events in preference to unnecessary personal attendance at events.
(ii) Failure to exercise proper budgetary control with respect to purchase of new scoreboards. There were insufficient quotations obtained for the work. There was then a failure to control expenditure. The resulting cost was nearly 3 times the original indication and the boards are not fit for purpose. There is also a matter concerning the purchase of a new computer when one had been offered at ‘no charge’
(iii) Failure to exercise proper budgetary control of the Kendo National squad expenditure with the result that there was a fiasco that was made public in respect to the European Kendo Championships.
(iv) Excessive expenditure for the ‘Intensive’ training programme.

Failure to consider members needs:-
There have been a number of calendar clashes between BKA and ‘members’ events which have presented the membership with unnecessary dilemmas. For example, the clash between Ozawa sensei’s seminar and the Kata seminar; the Chiba sensei seminar - Intensive training session and the Charity event; timetabling the BKA Open on the same weekend as the Kodokan seminar; the refusal to allow a grading on that weekend which would bring money to the BKA coffers. The timetabling of the Iwatate sensei seminar just before the Christmas period (bearing in mind the financial burden that families have at that time of year), all examples of insensitive scheduling and a neglect to consider the ‘real’ needs of the membership.

Conduct unbecoming:-
(i) At the Mumeshi grading of 2009 he was publicly unreasonable in his treatment of a member with severe learning difficulties. This resulted in an official complaint being made which is still unresolved.
(ii) He has used foul language in public whilst addressing BKA members on several occasions including juniors e.g. Sir Frank Bowden Taikai 2009 (There is a record of the language used which will be made available)
Both of these items ‘flag up’ serious concerns in respect to the Child Protection Policy the BKA currently has in place.

These actions in the opinion of the proposers constitute a serious case against Mr Davis because:-
Under article 11.10 he has ‘demonstrated less than satisfactory administrative skills’ and ‘been negligent in the execution of his duties.
In appendix 2 under the duties and responsibilities of Bu officers he has failed to ‘oversee the affairs of the Bu within the Bu financial budget’.
Article 2.1 of the constitution has been breached by him. This states ‘the Association is committed to encouraging the highest ethical standards and through practise the development of self-discipline and character’. As he is a high officer in the Association, this could constitute a reason for expulsion under Article 10.4 ‘the conduct of the member is injurious to the character and interests of the Association’

Under Byelaw 3: Contracts/procurement
Contracts or procurement of goods and services in excess of a
cumulative value of £500 in any one year shall be put out to tender
to at least 3 separate providers. A record shall be kept of these
tenders. The NC/BuEC may exercise judgement in balancing the
cost/quality of the tenders. … of the constitution

My new toy in a lister Petter diesel engine powering a Spencer Carter hydraulic pump, the reservoir of which you can see in the picture. The bit with the knobs is a dual flow regulator with "detent" flow controls. Two questions, can anyone explain how this detent control works? Secondly, does anyone know where I connect my hoses to power either a single ok double ram? The big fitment upper left is the return filter (I think), there are two 1/2" connectors on the dual flow regulator and there is the other connector, bottom left. Any hydraulics experts in the club or elsewhere in the ether?

ON-LINE ENROLMENT OF NEW MEMBERS

Greetings on this Easter morning and a fine morning it is. Just had our dojo renewal and insurance form from BKA. The letter also tries to clear up some confusion about the "dojo keyword". This can be given to new members to allow them to enrol as full members from the outset. This keyword is set (and changed) by the dojo officers (I was not aware of this) through the dojo configuration interface! (I will investigate this)
If the member is able to supply a matching keyword when they enrol, they are permitted to take out full membership. Otherwise they are restricted to temporary membership. The users guide linked from www.membership.kendo.org.uk provides full details of thi usage and other options available.
The membership secretary, Malcolm Smalley would like to encourage members to enrol on-line as it reduces his administrative burden and also reduces costs to BKA. I will try to access this configuration interface to set up our keyword. However, if any of you already have it let me know.

Extra Hour Practice next Sat 3 April

Possible new Dojo location

We have negotiated the use of the new dance studio at the Welsh Institute of Sport (WIS). Initially we will hire it for one month's practice. If we find it meets our requirements WIS are prepared to sign Akai Ryuu up on a permanent basis on Tues night at our usual time. It is a fantastic floor and also has the benefit of locker space, showers and does not close in the holidays.
At present the contractors are being asked to fix some minor outstanding items before WIS formally take it over. It should be available in the next month. I will keep you posted but meantime we will continue to use BOL.

Mid-term break

This Tuesday there will be no practice at BOL, because of the mid-term break. The alternative is to go to Bristol or PT. I intend to give Mark's dojo a visit on Wednesday and see some of our old friends.
You all missed a good night at Cheltenham. Good fun night, great Kendo and very friendly atmosphere with a large number of new kendoka to fight. Gary upheld club honour with one loss and two draws, very commendable, and good practice for MM 3's. Hope to see some of you Wed, otherwise next Sat.

Regional competition at Cheltenham

There was such a poor attendance last night that I thought it might be advisable to blog a reminder about the regional competition at Cheltenham.
Gareth is going straight from work. I shall be going from Usk. Lewis is looking for a lift from Cardiff, his number is 02920311963. Shaun is quite ill so not sure if he will be there. Anyway, if a number of you are going probably best to meet at Coldra roundabout (usual place) and take off from there at about 1830hrs. The event is from about 1930-2000hrs to about 2200hrs. Location is the YMCA gym in the centre of Cheltenham. Hope to see some of you there.

Exhibition at Heath leisure centre 17th October

Please note in your diaries the martial arts exhibition Sat week on the 17th October. We have been invited to put on an exhibition of Kendo from about 1015hrs. They have also offered the club a stand. We will need about 6 for the exhibition and perhaps a rota for the stand.
I can get a cloths dummy in place with full kendo armour on it. I have a couple of hat dummies which I shall bring in with some of my hand made japanese kabuto (helmets) on them, plus the suit of armour I have made. In the past I have been advised not to bring in any swords so better not!! The suit is not complete but it gives a flavour.
I have a couple of nice books illustrating various suits of armour and the definitive sword book by Sinclair which we can lay out on table. Thought we could hang a couple of tenegui, fans, handkechief's etc to give a Japanese flavour....as a backdrop to the table.
Any other thoughts would be appreciated. Please come to this exhibition and help the club spread the word. I would especially like a volunteer to mind the table, I don't want to lose any of my valuable armour or books. Probably need a hand to get some of the gear across from the car park. Thanks.

Visit to Kodokan for Matsumoto leaving practice

BEGINNERS CLASSES

The next beginners class will start on 3rd November and continue every Tues until 8th December inclusive. The first beginners class of 2010 will commence on 5th January 2010. Next mid term break is 26th Oct, therefore there will be no class on 27 October.
Picture is the finals of the all Japan High school championships. We were guests of Sumi sensei and got a front row seat. The kids were scarely good and bode well for Japan's Kendo future.

Matsumoto farewell at Kodokan

Kodokan will be saying a fond farewell to Matsumoto sensei with a final practice on Sat 10 Oct 09, time 1400-1700hrs. This will be followed by a dinner. If you wish to attend please contact James and Shaun, James to update the dinner head count, Shaun to arrange transport if required.

The young lady graciously agreed to my request to take our picture, and then agreed that I could take a picture of her, I think she thought I was safe because of my advanced age. James tried to get her to come to our next party but she declined on the advice of her friend who obviously did not like the cut of our gybe. It was not all hard work and no play in Japan.

Regional Kendo Shiai at Shodokan Cheltenham

The next regional Kendo Shiai will be held at Shodokan Dojo in Cheltenham on Wed 21 Oct 1930 - 2200hrs. Any club member who is interested in making the trip contact Frank. If enough of us show interest we may hire a minibus for trip. At the last one in Glos we did rather well, winning all our fights. This time it would be nice to give our less experienced kendoka the chance to fight for Akai Ryuu and it is a good warm up for Mumeshi. So, think about it over weekend and we will have a count on Tues night. Great fun and there is usually a drink afterwards at one of Cheltenham's finest inn's.

Mumeshi 3's Teams

We are provisionally going to put up two teams to go to Mummeshi 3 tournament this year. Shaun is not sure he will be around and neither is Mark. I will put myself available if we cannot fill the two teams. We want to give our members the chance to experience competition and Mummeshi is one of the best places to fight a lot of other players, the good, the very good, the quite ordinary and people just like ourselves who don't enter competitions from one year to the next.
I know that Andre, Nick, and James are up for it but we need a few more plus backups should someone have to pull out at last minute, and of course the proverbial problem, the Ikkyu on each team. So, we will raise this issue at each class and Mark will see if any of his club, who are still Akai Ryuu members are interested in being on our teams. Put the word out to any of our guys who cannot make class because of work committments but who might be able to get a Sat off for the competition. Talk about it on Tues.

Matsumoto last night and Kendo Dinner

Tuesday will be Matsumoto's last night with us. The plan is to have a short practice 1930 - 2030hrs and then take off to the Summer Palace chinese restaurant in Llandaff for a nice meal to send Matsumoto off in style.
I certainly have gained an enormous amount from his direction, though the great man has probably not noticed any significant improvement in my performance!! As a thank you to him for his fantastic input to our club over the last year I would like as many as possible to make Tues night. It looks as if we will have a healthy beginners class on Tues night so it might be quite busy for us all.
I have tried to book the Summer Palace this PM but no answer. I will continue to try and book. My aim is to book for 12 seats initially with a let out that there might be more. Please let me know if you intend to practice Tues night and if you wish a seat at the dinner. Let me know ASAP. The 9-12 regulars who practice on a Sat will all be going so I need the info immediately to assist the restaurant. Thank you all.

Kendo Demonstration at University of Wales Hospital

See below the message to Mark ref the group/sports event on Sat 17th Oct. Mark it in your diaries. We get an extra hour practice for free, and then a fun hour doing a demo. The demo's are always a good laugh, Andre and I can pretend to kill each other with a hack and slash session and the rest of you could do proper demo's of various oji Waza and basic strokes. Talk about it with you all when we get the chance.
The trophy cabinet is one small part of the display at Sumi/Honda's dojo at Fukuoka University. His student's are seriously good and wonderful human beings...when they are not in armour and showing you the error of your kendo ways!!!

The first session of the summer practices at Welsh Institute of Sport, Sophia Gardens, will be Thurs 23 July. We are in the basketball court, 1930-2100hrs. Our last session will be Thurs 3 Sept.

We return to Bishop of Llandaff Tues 8 Sept, when Matsumoto Sensei will be visiting us for the last time. The idea is to have a quick keiko that evening, then off for a chinese meal in Llandaff.

Matsumoto sensei leaving do - Sensei's last visit is 8 Sept

Matsumoto sensei will be unable to visit us in July when we move to Sophia Gardens, because his Thurs are booked up. We had a great practice last night, Matsumoto sensei gave us some great insights into Kata philosophy. I enjoyed it greatly.
Our intention, as a club, is to have a 1hr keiko on the 8 Sept (I will promise to keep Shaun to his word this time(:-> ), followed by a nice chinese meal in Llandaff. There will also be a simple presentation to express our thanks for all his sterling work with us. I have certainly enjoyed having such a great teacher visit our club so often this last year.

Good practice last night, someone did a Mark on me and got me on the end of my thumb, very painful.

A hearty congratulation to Andre, Rheese and Nick who all passed their grades at Watchet. Apparently Andre had the hardest fight against a petite blonde who was all over him, on the court, alas not on the night out!!! We must all take care to bring the guys back down to earth at our next practice on Sat at the Heath.

Half term Break and next beginners classH

Half term is Mon 25 - Fri 29 May. There will be no practice on Tues 26th. The last lesson in this beginners session will therefore be on 2 June. I would like the next beginners class to start on the 9 June, which would give us a full, uninterrupted 6 weeks before summer term ends on mon 20 July.

We will need to move our summer practice beginning on the 21 July until 1 sept. We will give you an update, once we have confirmed where summer practice will be held, times etc. Of course, yours truly will be in Japan from 9th July - 3 Aug....and I may need some time to recuperate!!!

I must advise members to be fully paid-up BKA members and to furnish Mark or Myself with Proof ASAP. By having no insurance against injury to yourselves and to other club members you are jeopardising your club membership and indeed the club's membership of the BKA. We have just had a list from BKA showing fully paid up members and those who have not paid. This is unfair to your team mates and in fact excludes you from practicing at our club or any other BKA dojo and from BKA events. Also, the BKA stops your grading clock for as long as you do not pay.

First, congratulations to Akai Ryuu team and LDI team (Frank, Andre + 1 Uni Andy) for reaching finals of inter regional competition. I hope everyone enjoyed the night and the friendly atmosphere. I saw some good kendo, Sam put on a great performance for one so new to Kendo.

It will be scheduled for just before the end of March and will be for 5-7 days, taking in practices at maybe 4-5 dojos (plus a bit of sightseeing). Shaun thinks the cost of flights, accomodation and vehicle hire to be under £250 each with members arranging their own way to the plane at this end (Cardiff, Bristol or Birmingham???) . Please let Shaun know if you are interested in going.

This is just a reminder about the cancer charity event that Akai Ryuu is hosting 7-8 March at the Heath. To enter you need to register on the www.kendocharity.org.uk. This is a very prestigious event and we would like as many members, whatever the grade, to enter this charity competition. I need to speak with Shaun and Mark ref organisation and management of the event, we will probably need volunteers to assist Kazuyo and Phil. I will put another post up in Feb when I have more details and lists of volunteers etc. Entry fees are £10 adults and £5 juniors, concessions and unemployed. The fees are donated equally to both charity organisations

I thought you would appreciate the progress this armourer has made in his 59 years. The picture could be, may be myself wearing my first attempt at a suit of armour. A helpful and knowing friend gave me this original. Of course we were slimmer in those days!!
